IP stands for Ingress Protection. In regular language that simply measures how much protection a device has against the ingress of water. Each number indicates a level of testing from a light sprinkle to a huge blast from a fire hose to finally submerging the device in the water. When you see the numbers know that the first number indicates a device’s protection against solids, aka dust. The second number indicates it’s protection against liquids. So an IP 61 can withstand a light splash you might get from washing your hands but nothing more while a IP68 could be left in your pocket while you swimming for up to 30 minutes. In addition, some vendors go as far to say X as the first number because it seems redundant to say your device is somewhat waterproof but not dust proof. For example:
IP65 (aka X5)

- Enclosures Able to protect against Immersion up to 1 m Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). Test duration: 30 minutes

This Chinese import brings the sound and the fun. Right now there are a few resellers on Amazon but the one we selected had the best ratings and lowest price. The WOW Sound Speaker is the highest priced floating Bluetooth speaker that we reviewed. This thing feels pretty robust and it’s a bit big. It kind of feels like you’re bringing your big boombox to the party while all the kids have iPhones. Other than using the floatation device I can’t figure out why it has that shape. Overall, it’s waterproof and it floats, it’s well built and I think it’d make multiple trips to the beach, lake and pool. However, the sound is a bit hit or miss for a speaker that cost this much. You could buy and replace 7 altecs for the price of one of these. I’d only buy this if you were a bit harder on your things and sound quality wasn’t a priority.
